Regional Facility Update – USAPA South East Region

Here are some aerial (drone) photos taken by Paragon Consulting, the engineering firm/Project Managers. See below.   by  Peter Phelps, USAPA Ambassador GA

My favorite (immediately below) – shows the Complex (Spalding County Pickleball Complex) and the Park (Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park) it is in [notice the lake, trails, ball fields (soccer and baseball/softball), disc golf, picnic pavilions, etc … just a beautiful setting]. The Pickleball Complex has 18 dedicated courts, four with cover (plans to cover 8 more); a concession/restroom facility (also: office, pro shop, storage, changing stations, showers, three roll-up service windows in front, etc); outdoor/commercial picture tables down the middle for eating and socializing; shade structures on the “back” courts; bleachers outside all courts; walkways (great navigation) in and around all courts; and vendor and RV areas. It is one of the finest facilities in the whole country and we are getting national attention. We will only operate for 6-7 months in 2017, since construction is to be completed in June. We have already secured three major tournaments (people have taken notice):  the GA State Games – Pickleball Event in June; the Atlantic South Regional Pickleball Tournament in October; and the Super Seniors (SSIPA) National Championships in October. In addition, we are planning a local/area tournament called the Doc Holliday Shootout (Holliday was a Griffin native) in August. As soon as possible, we also hope to have structured-designated play times and leagues for both youth and adults, along with learn-to-play clinics and skill clinics

Indoor Facility Update – Leland NC

LELAND NC – Pickleball Destination – well maybe, if Richard Holloman can convince the town to invest in his idea of a new indoor facility with an estimated price tag of $600,000.00 to 1 Million Dollars. Richard, whom I have spoken with several times, just completed a year’s worth of study and he is now ready for the town to take action to determine the benefits of building an indoor pickleball facility in Leland. Pickleball is not new to the area as Waterford, Magnolia Greens and Brunswick Forest all feature outdoor courts on which to play pickleball, Brunswick Forest resident Richard Holloman has other ideas. “The economic impact that this creates would not have the value to an individual owner as it has to a local government,” Holloman said. Along with promoting and “branding” the area as a pickleball destination, Holloman said an indoor facility would provide players much-needed protection from weather, especially during tournaments. Holloman said the Leland area has already featured a number of tournaments, drawing an average of 120 players per tournament. The number of pickleball players in Leland totals about 700, while about 1,200 exist countywide, he said, though the tournaments draw players from other areas as well.
